For over 25 years Ron and Andrea Camier had been involved in Land Rover touring and adventure camping in Gippsland. Australia is the country for four wheel drive vehicles. Ranging from dense alpine ash forests to open, grassy high plains, the rugged beauty of this region is awe inspiring, nothing too tough for a 110!
Throughout Gippsland and the high country there are remote valleys with crystal clear streams and river-flats ideal for camping, many of which are only accessible by tough Land Rovers. The region contains large and spectacular national parks, but in winter many tracks are inaccessible due to snow and seasonal track closures by the land management authorities. So the best time to view the high Alpine country is from November to May. Based in Gippsland, 160 km east of Melbourne, is four wheel drive tour company “Mountain-Top Experience”, who operate a fleet of Land Rover Defenders.
In summer and Autumn they run guided tag-along tours for other Land Rover owners, during winter they operate a snow transport service to the Mt Baw Baw Alpine Ski Resort, and all year round they run a historic passenger tour from the old gold mining town of Walhalla. Concurrent with this they provide Land Rover driver training courses, run bushwalker transport to the Australian Alps Walking Track, manufacture
special camping accessories for Defenders and also have published a guide book (now into its second edition) for 4WD
touring in the region.
Of most interest though, for international visitors, is that they hire out Land Rover vehicles fully equipped with everything for exploring the region. Mountain-Top Experience have found that the fully-equipped Defender rentals are particularly popular with French, South African and Canadian visitors, some of whom come back regularly. In fact one of the South Africans concluded a trip saying “we want to book you for this weekend for the next thirty years!” Further information is available at www.mountaintopexperience.com
